Auto adjust individual row height based on text length?

Robert,

I had just posted the same question as Kathryn. You are right, it’s not pretty but it works, … almost. If there is a pagebreak in the text object sometimes the last line is repeated on the next page. Did you, or someone else, had the same problem? If so, is there a way to avoid it?

Robert digpen@EARTHLINK.NET 30/05/98 8:15:10 >>>

  1. Make the Text Column a Master Break.
  2. Set the cell format to Wrap Text
  3. Resize the width of this cell to whatever you’d like. 4) Move the cells so they line up.

It may not be the prettiest, but it works.

PS. (to all)
We are using BO a few months now. I’m propably not the most intelligent user, but my experience with the product until now is the following. What I like about the product is the way to get data into a report, it is very intuitive and better than any other product I’ve seen so far. But from the moment the data is fetched and I’m beginning to work on the layout of the report my intuition (and that of our users) seems to reach its limits. I’m ending frequently with the correct result, achieved in an ugly way and with a lot of work, and with a great fear that I’ll have to change the report somewhere in the future. To be concrete, The things that are not very intuitive to me are, among others (I’m sure I’m forgetting many): - Some menu options are hard to find and easy to forget (hiding a column, setting a complex filter, cell height and width : sometimes under format menu, sometimes under cell format : tab appeareance, …) - Moving a cell in a header section (or anywhere on a report) asks me strange questions like do you want to delete the section - Displaying data not in tabular form but just each field somewhere in the report (eg header section on an order from). - When I don’t specify a sort order (or I do it in the query pannel) BO sorts the data on its own, and doesn’t care for the sort order specified in the query pannel - Headers spanning multiple columns : pfff - A problem I got with the text cell above : Cell’s with the option ‘repeat on every page’ are ‘overwritten’ with the text-cell begining from page 2. I had to move them to the header section (maybe the best anyway but the option is there and should work I think) - … I can think of many more but I’m putting to much time in this message

What do I want to say here?
In my opinion (I now it could be humbler) Bussines Objects should see as its highest priority : making BO more intuitive in its layout features

Now please, bark if you don’t agree and bark if you do

Peter

Peter,

…If there is a pagebreak in the text object sometimes the last line is repeated on the next page. Did you, or someone else, had the same problem? If so, is there a way to avoid it?
I haven’t had this problem but I am sure that if you prevent a break from appearing in the middle of a section it will force the data to the next page. Since you are creating a ‘Break’ by using the master it should work for just about any of the reports.

  • Some menu options are hard to find and easy to forget (hiding a column,
setting a complex filter, cell height and width : sometimes under format menu, sometimes under cell format : tab appeareance, …) Some of these changes have been made do to user requests (they did appear differently in 4.0.x for many of these. Most of the options appear in more than one area (hence they seem to be in mixed areas). Some of the commands are also CONTEXT sensitive. They will not appear on a menu unless they are possible.
  • Moving a cell in a header section (or anywhere on a report) asks me
strange questions like do you want to delete the section. This is because you are moving a header from where it created the break. Since you didn’t use a key combination (to move or copy), it assumes that you want to remove it and try again in a different location. I usually create the cell that I want to place the object into and then move the cell.
It will do a straight exchange.
  • Displaying data not in tabular form but just each field somewhere in the
report (eg header section on an order from). I agree that this can be a hassle. The reason is because it was designed for simple reports and how the data interacts with other ‘linked’ information. It is easier to COPY rows of cells and then drag your information around to reposition it. Once that is done I usually just make the unwanted cells EMPTY (no fill, no border). That allows me some freedom of creation and keeps the information linked as it should be (in the body of the report).
  • When I don’t specify a sort order (or I do it in the query pannel) BO
sorts the data on its own, and doesn’t care for the sort order specified in the query pannel
The sort order is based on the ORIGINAL sort order when you generated the report. It places this sort order in the structure (Slice and Dice). BO by default sorts on Column One of your data. It allows BO to compress the data into the microcube by making it relational. If you want to change it, I suggest just using slice and dice or creating a =RowIndex() object that you can sort off of. The RowIndex will make the sorts dynamic with your Query Panel sorts.
  • Headers spanning multiple columns : pfff
Not too bad with a straight tabular report. Last I heard there is an Enhancement request for making their way into Crosstabs (and therefore tabular reports).
  • A problem I got with the text cell above : Cell’s with the option
‘repeat on every page’ are ‘overwritten’ with the text-cell begining from page 2. I had to move them to the header section (maybe the best anyway but the option is there and should work I think) I think you only have this problem if you MANUALLY move the cells around. I have yet to have this happen to me. Maybe I am missing a step. If you are moving the data into the Header Section and NOT getting a #Multivalue, then I can only assume the information is freeformed. In that case change your Table Alignment and set it to a distance from the TOP and LEFT side of the page (versus section, etc…)

Sorry for the long email. I have worked with plenty of applications and while Business Objects may not be the best or the most intuitive, it is probably one of the better ‘Jack of All Trade’ applications that I’ve used. I query off of many different database types and being able to use the same application for many of them helps.
