Are "Admin privileges" needed to modify and publish a Universe?

I’m fighting with the Admin (management) on being able to modify and publish a Universe.

For many years I was able to modify my lone Universe, but not they say I cannot do so, because “changes to a Universe require Admin privileges”. Is this really true?

They are protecting the “server” but I have no idea how to access it nor any idea what to do should I be able to. But I have the skills to modify and publish a Universe. I recently modified a Universe but could not publish it.

Also, I could not import a report using Rich Client.

Do these errors look like permission issues or some technical issue that needs resolved.

Administrator privileges are not needed to modify and publish universes. There is a build in AD group called Universe Designer Users that can be used to assign permissions to users who will be designing universes. There isn’t an Access Level for that functionality but Full Control on the universe folder should do it.

The error message that you posted looks to me like some of the Business Objects services are down. Specifically, it looks like either the Input or Output File Repository servers are down. Most likely the Input File Repository Server since it can’t pull up a report.

JohnB - very good, thank you!

One more question, the Administrators are still bellyaching …

Is it possible to restrict the ability to modify (or access) specific Universes in IDT?

Not in the Information Design Tool, no. Permissions on the universe are granted using the CMC by administrators.

Yes, I understand it would be done in the CMC. But I’m just checking that they could give me access to modify / publish Universe A only and so I don’t have the ability to modify Universes B-Z.

Can they give me read only access to Universes B-Z ? that would be a big help to see the logic.

Thanks again.

Yes, they should be able to grant you these permissions.

I’m a little late to the party but wanted to chime in. I am the BOB Admin for our organization. We have a number of universe designers. They have been granted the rights to create/modify/publish universes. ADMIN RIGHTS ARE NOT REQUIRED. We created separate Folders in our reporting areas for each universe and then control each developer’s access to the Folder containing the universe they work on. It’s not that difficult to control this. They only have access to the universes for which they are responsible. They cannot see any other universes.
