=> Matthew,
You can drill down using a measure defined with an aggregate aware function.
But, as soon as you will need more detailed information than the aggregated one, BusinessObjects will generate the SQL to get these detailed data… and so, won’t be able anymore to use the advantage of the aggregated data.
Let’s take a simple example. In the Designer module, you define this measure with the aggregate aware function using an aggregated table. You also define objects that are incompatible with this aggregated table. So as you know, now this measure object is dynamic depending on the other objects you will associate to it in the query panel. In the scope of analysis of your query, if you choose a level that includes objects you defined as incompatible with the aggregated table, BusinessObjects will prepare the query to get all information you could ask for, that means even the non-compatible objects will be retrieved… And by definition, the incompatible objects won’t use the aggregated table!
But if in the scope of analysis of your query you do not select incompatible information, BusinessObjects will use the aggregated table… unless you choose to expend the scope of analysis with more detailed and incompatible information!

Hi Matthew:
As far as I know, Aggregate aware works on the DBMS side (Query Generation) only. If anyone knows of how it might be used on the client side, I would like to know myself.

You can use Aggregate Awareness with drill through. Lets say your initial query uses an aggregate table and you bring back some of the dimensions form your hierarchy. Now, a user wants more detailed information, if they drill through (retrieve more detailed info from the DB), BusObj will generate a new query. If it is at a sufficient detail, then the lower level table will be used.

Eric,
There’s something certainly worth reading on http://www.islink.com about
this subject. I also believe that there’s also a white paper regarding
aggregate awareness on the BusinessObjects Technical Support web site. Hope
this helps.

Hi.
Does anybody have any resource material detailing the Aggregate Awareness function of business Objects ?
Thank you.
