Oracle Discoverer

Regarding the Oct. 8 2001 Issue #2001-545:

Question regarding Oracle Discoverer tool. I took classes in Oracle Discovere, and found compared to Bus. Objects it does not offer the end user as much flexibility. There is virtually no ability to format data to create a report.

The Oracle Trainer recommended dumping data into Excel to format. So, not good for a query that is to be re-run on a regular basis to create a report.

Also, Oracle Discoverer is not intuitive when creating the end user layer (EUL - their name for the Universe: semantic layer). Issues with chasm and loop do occur, and are not easily detected.

Also, just got word back from Oracel Metalink support website, Oracle Discoverer and Business Objects cannot co-exist on the same P.C.

Just to update the above-given information:

The BO 5.x and BO 6.x can normally co-exist on the same PC with Oracle Discoverer. I experienced no problems in using both reporting tools on the same machine in the last more than 20 months.

Marek,

What does your experience say when you compare BO 6.x with Disoverer ?

WOW! This thread spans about 7 years with just one post in one year!!! :blue: :blue: :blue:

I hate to break the tradition here, hee hee. But in my humble opinion, Business Objects XI is in the top tier, if not the number 1, of all BI suites. Discoverer is probably in the 2nd tier, among other vendors like Panarama.

The interface of Discoverer is very poor. It is still around mainly because it is from Oracle (strong backing), not because it is good.

Hope this helps.
