I’ve been using Designer XI and would like to be able to sort the columns in
the tables into alpha order. At the moment they are in random order and it
is quite difficult to find columns in very long tables to drag over to the
classes panel.
Is there a way to do this ?

I’m using Designer 6.5 (can’t remember if this parameter is the same for XI, but I would think so).
After opening/importing the universe select File > Parameters
On the Parameter tab there is a parameter called COLUMNS_SORT which is set to NO by default.
Change this value to YES.
YES = Sort columns alphabetically
NO = Sort columns in the order they were retrieved from the database
