BusinessObjects Board

Pro's and Con's

Hi,
I’m a newbie to Business Objects. In my company we consider buying Business Objects. We compared it to Cognos Impromptu which I personally think is far less functionally than Business Objects. Can anyone list the Pro’s and Con’s of Business Objects? We plan using UNIX/Windows as a server and if possible also as client. Database will be Sybase and Oracle. First look at Business Objects looks great, so I wanted to ask those who use it for some time with experience if we have to expect problems or if you say, Busines Objects is as great as it looks and well worth its money. Regards,
Antje

BO is great no doubt! (It has its flaws but don’t they all) If you have the money and depending what you want to do I would buy BO and Cognos Powerplay.
BO is great for user reporting etc
Cognos Powerplay is much better at the analytical stuff, well I say better, what I mean is much faster, so if you want to do a lot of drilling and other analysis work I would go for PowerPlay. But impromptu is rubbish, clunky and much less functional.

Hi Antje

Sorry this response is a bit late. We had a site licence for Cognos as part of a deal with a number of universities in Australia. We had been using Powerplay successfully for a number of years and when we came to develop our Data Warehouse assumed we would use Impromptu - until we tried it. Our users do a lot of adhoc queries - there was no way Impromptu was going to be user friendly enough. We replaced Cognos with BusinessObjects 5 years ago (This was a huge business decision - I had to actually sell BusinessObjects to the individual faculties) - we have never regretted it (despite the odd little glitch now and then). Our users (600+ from Senior Executives to junior admin staff) love the product and it has been one of the key reasons that our Data Warehouse has been so successful. If you care about your users, go with BusinessObjects.
