BusinessObjects Board

BO vs. Actuate

Listers.

Does anyone have any experience of using an e-reporting product called ACTUATE ?

Or - more the the point - has anybody had cause to compare Actuate to Business Objects and make a decision based on their findings ? Does either product provide a preferable solution for a particular type of problem or requirement ?

If anyone has any experience on this I would be most grateful if you could email me direct with any information.

Many thanks,

Darren Griffin.

You should search the archives on “Actuate”. I posted a similar question about 3 months ago.

Actuate is an enterprise/production reporting tool. The tool is more for programmer/developer. There is a slimmed down version targeted for “end-user”, but it is still not an end-user query tool.
The last version I used was version 4.1. It is now up to version 5.
Since it is more a development tool, it is very flexible. You can pretty much do anything you want with Actuate.
The nice thing about Actuate is the reusable report components. You can prebuild a calculation (i.e. revenue calculation) as a class, and other reports can reuse that object or subclass it and modify it. It is an object oriented tool, based on Visual Basic. Other features that it has:

  • export to Excel
  • export to other analytical tool, such as Brio (It promised to deliver integration with BO) - Zero client (DHTML)
  • One report, multiple data sources

In my previous life, we first implemented Actuate, and later Business Objects for users who enjoy ad-hoc and analytical reporting.

Hope that helps.
