512 row limit on data connections and Xcelsius components

Hi All,

Is 512 row limit on data connections and Xcelsius components taken care in Xcelsius 2008 SP3?

Thanks,
Rafeeq

There is no limit and never was a limit.

512 rows is a setting found in File >> Preferences > Excel Options.

If you need more, change the setting, but the larger you go, the worse the model will perform. Some people use 5k rows as a limit. Many people might agree on staying under 1k however.

This is something I had some questions about last year in a previous post. I was under the impression then that a reasonbale limit was about 2k. I pretty sure there is no published limit that I have found or seen so far. Does anyone know if this gets any better if you are using the Server version of Xcelsius 2008? I currently have the Engage 2008 and beyond 2k it got pretty sketch  and that wasn’t even with any calculations or other sundry features built into the spreadsheet tabs.

In my experience the amount of data you bring in is not the issue. Its the time it takes Xcelsius to map the data from the web service and then for a component to map it so you can display it. Depending on how many rows you have it will take longer to map which means longer development and build times. I also try to stay under the 2k limit in the most extreme cases, but I generally like to only bring in dashboard level data which is generally 1-15 rows of data.

I could probably live with slow but that hasn’t been my experience. Even when I would import a few thousand rows directly into the dashboard spreadsheet tab i could not get it to reliably accept large ranges of data in some of the objects I was working with. I would use several different tabs that would let me aggregate the data from one tab to the next based on values selected in several filters and I couldn’t reliably bind to the filter object a source data range in the first tab beyond 2000 rows without the Xcelsius IDE getting really squirrely and just not accepting that range (and yes I set the Max Number of Rows accordingly). I was just hoping that maybe the Server version wouldn’t be as limited.

P.S. Just to clarify the couple of thousand rows was less than 10 columns deep with pretty short strings and ints for the data.

Three factors make up the complexity of an Xcelsius dashboard in my books:

  • How much data is brought back/in-memory, not just number of rows, but how many columns
  • How many and which MS Excel formulas are you using
  • How many Xcelsius components are you using and do they have to compute somehting in addition such as dynamic visbility etc.

I have no webservice, is local. The table contains 10 columns. I have a map, two combos and a line chart. The line chart has to paint 1500 points.

It also depends on what your data connection method is. If you are using Live Office connections, then there is also a limit set under the hood on the BO server(s).
