when should WebI be used for report distribution?

When the number of final users is big. Final users donā€™t need to modify report with B.O. Reporter: they only need to show the results, and often they have only Internet Explorer to do this.

What complexity of drill down is possible with WebI and what are the
tradeoffs vs full client?

Drill down complexity is strictly correlated with hierarchies: if you define hierarchies in B.O. Designer, you can produce interactive reports, such as coloured bars clicking on which you drill down making another query hierarchically deeper.

How do you move Webi(.wid or .wqy) documents between two repositories

Kiran Gullapalli (BOB member since 2002-09-11)

Hi,

First of all Thanks a lot for starting a very nice topic.

I have few queries on WEBI 6.5

  1. Can I access external data souce (like excel) in WEBI for report creation?

  2. Just like slice/dice in full clinet do we have any such facility in WEBI ( Not jsut scope of Analysis any such graphical representation like full client)?

  3. In WEBI, the common problem is ā€˜document os corruptedā€™: Once this happens there is no other option but to recreate the report. How can we avoid this?

  4. If I create two different queries, how can I synchozise those two (Can I link these two data providers like Full clinet ā€˜Linkā€™ option ?)

Regards
Saswati

We had this same issue. I re-exported all the corrupted documents and it worked.

It is not yet available.(one of the many limitations in Web-I)

Thanks

You canā€™t access external data souce (like excel) in WEBI, may be this will be available in later versions.

You must save the documents as ā€œPersonal Documentsā€. So they are visible on the ā€œDocumentsā€ directory (of a bo user) like normal files .wqy or .wid, depending on release of Webi. You copy them on the same ā€œDocumentsā€ directory (under the same or another user) of the target repository. So you find them on ā€œPersonal Documentsā€ of the target user of the target repository (excuse me for my bad english)

Just had to do this so hereā€™s my take on it (using UNIX) ->

  1. Log into Infoview and save document to be moved in Personal Docs.
  2. Log onto ā€˜sourceā€™ UNIX box and cd to /opt/Document_Cache/user/ (where is the BO user profile name you used to log into Infoview and which accesses the source repository).
  3. If you list the contents of this directory the names used for the wids are not particularly helpful (they have names like 00001234.wid) so ā€¦
  4. look at the contents of the index.dat file and you should be able to tie down your document name to a wid file number (make a note of it - just in case).
  5. From a CMD prompt on local PC: FTP onto UNIX box, switch to binary mode (not sure if this is necessary, but its something I tend to trust in), and get (or mget) your wid(s).
  6. Now FTP onto target UNIX box, switch to binary mode, and put (or mput) your wid(s) into /opt/Document_Cache/user/ (where is the BO user profile name you use to log into Infoview and which accesses the target repository).
  7. Log onto Infoview for target repository and your wid(s) will be in your Personal docs. However, their titles will be the same as the wid document number you wrote down earlier
  8. Refresh/Save the document using itā€™s original ā€œreport nameā€.

Done! Hopefully!!

You could always FTP directly between source/target systems.
I only did it this way because itā€™s the way I was told do it

Regards,
Pete

p.s. this method assumes you have relevant access rights to the source and target systems!

Hi,

Can somebody give me the best procedure to migrate the WID reports from one environment to another environment on windows machine.
All the WI reports are available on DEV repository, Now I have to move them different UAT repository on different machine.

Thanks
Steve

Here are some notes on my adaptation of Peter Hughesā€™ Unix BO server migration.

WebI Report Migration - Windows Server Instructions:

  1. Log into Infoview and save document to be moved in Personal Docs.

  2. Log on to the source Windows BO server and locate the user directories, for example:
    C:\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 6\nodes<bo_server_name>\mycluster\storage\user<username>
    or
    E:\BOSHARE\DOCS\user<username>
I actually did a regular Windows Explorer search for files matching the pattern *.wid on the serverā€™s local drives. My source development server followed the first directory structure and my production server followed the second.

  3. If you list the contents of this directory the names used for the wids are not particularly helpful (they have names like 00001234.wid) so ā€¦

  4. look at the contents of the index.dat file (use WordPad as it be more readable, correctly interpretting the carraige returns) and you should be able to tie down your document name to a wid file number (make a note of it - just in case).

  5. Copy the desired *.wid files to a file share you can access from the target server.

  6. Log on to the target Windows server and copy the *.wid files to the C:\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 6\nodes<bo_server_name>\mycluster\storage\user<user_name> (where is the BO user profile name you use to log into Infoview and which accesses the target repository).

  7. Log on to Infoview for target repository and your wid(s) will be in your Personal docs. However, their titles will be the same as the wid document number you wrote down earlier.

  8. Refresh/Save the document using itā€™s original ā€œreport nameā€.

hi i wanted to know what exactly is the wid file numberā€¦ is it the docid??

siddharth

Siddharth :india: (BOB member since 2005-12-16)

Hi,

personal documents do not have a docid.
I have created an ASP page just for this purpose.

  1. You can select any corporate document(-s)
  2. It saves these to your personal folder
  3. It renames them there from the number to the actual name (lookup in the index file)
  4. it then copies these to the acceptance (production) environment.

Only thing to be done then is open them using the user to which directory they atre copied and save them to corporate (and even that could be automated to a certain pointā€¦but since thereā€™s Xiā€¦thereā€™s no needā€¦)

Regards,

Gerard

highandstoned :netherlands: (BOB member since 2005-08-01)

Hi Siddharth,

No, the actual wid file number is just a (random?) number that is assigned to the file name of the file that contains your wid. It has no relation to the docid (at least not to my knowledge - and I did check this).

Hence why you have to check the index.dat file - that contains a list of the filenames and the corresponding wid name/title.

I am not able to find the folder mentioned, may i know where wid files are stored in unix box exactly.

Shynish,
I had trouble finding the files too. On our server they were located in /app/bo/bo651/nodes//bo651cluster/storage/user/. Hope this helps!
