BO vs Crystal Reports

Can BO handle subreports similar to the way Crystal Reports does?

For example, if I have demographic information that needs to go on every contract, can I define a separate report and then place it on a master contract report?

Most of our contracts are made up of the same basic data elements, but the verbiage on the contract may vary from state to state. In a past project using Crystal we were able to define a number of subreports (buyer info., seller info., finance calculations, etc.), then just create a master contract and insert these subreports into the specific detail sections.

Is something like this possible with BO? Can you have truly portable subcontracts? Or would I need to “map” all of those individual data elements in every master contract?

Thanks!

Oh yes, I have struggled with writing reports in BO after writing them in Crystal. There is no direct way to Link subreports like you did in Crystal. There are many ways to write reports in BO though, and I can about 99 percent guarentee there is a way to get the results you need.

Did you know when you do that in crystal that it will run the query for your subreport for every record in your main query?? Not very efficiant that way, in BO, your queries only run one time and you can use that result set in as many places as you want. I would think you can pull your data in 2 queries and link the queries in the report, then create a master detail report. This should get you close.

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I assumed it could be done within BO, and it’s good to have that confirmed. Now, if I could just blink and all the old Crystal contracts were magically transformed into new BO contracts, pointing to the new data sources, I’d be happier still.

No problem. You really have to try and not think of how crystal does things if you are converting, it will hang you up. BO does a lot of things in a different way and uses different terms. I.E. TopN in Crystal, is Ranking in BO.

You are in DSM? Me Too.

Moving this topic to General Discussion. You might get more feedback there.

I’ll be in Des Moines next week.

Would love to meet you Dave. Where are you going to be? Are you doing training at a large DSM company, wont mention the name. I used to work there, I believe you have done training there before.

I’m so sorry Dave. I spent my first 18 winters in Des Moines and I still think of February as the longest month of the year. Of course, back then there were no sky walks connecting buildings downtown, and there wasn’t much of anything to do in Des Moines.

I know Wellmark uses BO. What other Des Moines companies use it? Not that I’ll ever move back there, I’m just curious.

Well, I have spent 33 winters here, and January to April is the longes part of the year. There are 2 other very large companies in Des Moines that I know of that use BO.
