Link v Disable

Hi,

I know that there have been several discussions / suggestions on this previously but I’ve not yet come across a clear / consistent answer (Maybe there isn’t one)

It’s time to reorganise my repository …

  1. Everything is exported to the top level (universes / documents).
  2. Lower level groups have relevant universes / documents enabled

Classic poor performance stuff.

How can I turn it around using Linking ?

Many thanks

Pete:

If you already have items exported to the top level, disabled, then enabled at a lower level, you’re not that far off. Simply “unlink” the items at the top level and they will automagically become “linked” instead of “enabled” at the lower level. At least that has been my experience. That means that you don’t have to worry so much about getting everything back in the correct place… if it is correct now, after unlinking it should still be okay.

What’s the difference between linking and enabling?

Linking is making the universe available to a group. It is by default enabled at that point. If you have a universe linked to a group and you disable it, then no one in the group can use it while working online. My experience is that it is best to only disable when there is a system problem and control access by groups.

So if you link a universe to a group, does that automatically cause other groups to not have access to it? Isn’t that the same as disabling and enabling?

It becomes a performance issue.

If you export to the “top level” that’s one row in the repository. If you disable at the top level, that’s two rows in the repository. If you “enable” at a lower level, that’s 3 rows. Multiply that by the number of users and resources in your repository…

Now unlink at the top level, and relink at the lower level. That’s one row (versus three). That helps performance… in some cases, a lot.

OK, that makes sense. I assume that the performance improvement is in the repository connections, such as displaying a list of available universes, or downloading a universe. Is that correct?
